As Colorado continues to recover from last year’s unprecedented wildfire season, the Federal Emergency Management Association (FEMA) wants the state’s residents to understand the increased risk for floods and how to prepare for the upcoming wildfire season.

FEMA will host a series of live webinars in April as part of its outreach efforts to increase awareness about what happens after this type of record-breaking disaster.

Dr. Ragan Adams, Colorado State University veterinary extension specialist and disaster preparation recovery expert, will be a featured speaker for two of the webinars. She is part of the Department of Clinical Sciences at CSU.

The series starts Monday, April 12, and is free and open to the public.

Adams will discuss how to prepare large animals for disaster incidents. She is a national expert on this topic and has written about the importance of planning ahead to protect animals during disasters.

“People are rightly concerned about COVID-19, but as we move into spring and after classes are over, there will be more recognition that many things changed last year following the fires,” she said.

Adams said a simple drive into the Poudre Canyon and to open spaces, including CSU’s Mountain Campus, reveals the damage causes by the wildfires.

The webinars will include wildfire, flood, agriculture and insurance experts who will discuss recovery and rebuilding aspects as well as increased flood risk after a wildfire.

Panelists will answer frequently asked questions and provide resources for the public.
